The Famosa Slough is a 37-acre wetland between Ocean Beach and the San Diego Sports Arena area in the City of San Diego. The slough is connected via a channel to the San Diego River which flows into the ocean at Ocean Beach. In 2009, LCB began assisting the Friends of Famosa Slough (Friends), a non-profit corporation, to help the Friends preserve the last key privately held properties near the slough. Working with willing sellers on behalf of the Friends, LCB led property negotiations and helped find funds to secure the parcels. Working with the Friends during difficult economic times, LCB sought and secured grant funds to purchase the parcels and helped resolved complex encroachment issues. As a result, the Friends purchased and preserved the first property in 2012 and the second in 2014.
